In order to achieve this vision it aims to:

  • To develop and maintain a  national identity for the Chest movement in South Africa.
  • To co-ordinate approaches to specific issues within the Chest movement.
  • To lobby on behalf of the individual members at national and government level.
  • To inspire involve, develop and encourage the member chests.
  • To seek funding on a national level to implement at regional level.
  • To co-ordinate national programs in which the individual member Community Chests participate in.
  • To engage with international bodies such as United Way in order to ensure that the movement adopts best practices.
This implies that the national body serves its constituent members who are the implementing bodies within the movement.

The Community Chest, an affiliate of United Way Worldwide (UWW), celebrated the Day of Action, by donating swimming aids to the St. Theresa’s Home for Children, in Sydenham, Durban.  It was felt that the swimming aids sponsored by a donor would be best used at the home which cares for 70 boys, ranging between the ages of 4 to 18 years of age.  The boys at the home come from disadvantaged communities or difficult circumstances.  Teaching children to swim has both health and safety benefits while promoting a healthy level of physical and social activity.  Debbie Bowes, principal of the home, expressed her gratitude to Gordon McDonald, Director of the Community Chest.

mandela day

The staff of SAB Pietermaritzburg celebrated Mandela Day on the 18th July 2011 by involving themselves in the painting of the offices of Zithuthukise Development Organisation. This was part of their Community Project in celebration of Mandela Day. This involvement of SAB demonstrated the desire of corporates like SAB to make a difference in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people.

In addition SAB from its Corporate Social Investment Budget, installed 6 water tanks in the area serviced by Zithuthukise Development Organisation.
